SOC/TR is responsible for Rapid Intervention, Structural Collapse, High/Low Angle, Trench, Confined Space, Surface Water Rescue and any other Technical Rescue. The 5 companies involved are Engine 8, Engine 9, Engine 12, Engine 13 and Rescue 1. These units are commanded by unit 230 (Batt. Chief) and a District Major of which ever district the company is located in.
SOC/TR has been fully staffed since March of 2000. Until then SOC/TR was accomplished by different companies throughout the city. In June of 2005, Engines 8 and 12 were initiated into SOC/TR. They were assigned one quarter of the city for Rapid Intervention incidents. Structure fire responses within the Lexington Fire Dept. will get you 3 Engines, 2 Ladders, 1 EC unit (ambulance), 1 District Major, The Rescue and the closest Squad. This has been a very successful direction that the fire dept has taken us. SOC/TR units average approx. 200 hours of extra training per year. This is after the required 100 hours dictated by the state of Kentucky.
